Sports at My School
I appreciate the guest post, Vito Rivers
Fall is a big time for sports at school and since I’m a teacher it’s all I can do to keep my kids’ attention. Between the internet and DIRECTV and all the practices they’ve got afterschool I have a really hard time getting them to think what they do in the classroom is of any importance! I totally understand – I was a gymnast in high school and was constantly leaving class early to go to practice or meets but I also kept my grades up because I knew if I didn’t I’d be yanked right off that team by my parents. I think the problem is that we’re putting too much emphasis on whether or not kids might get a scholarship for throwing a baseballor something than on whether or not they’re learning which is the whole reason they’re in school in the first place! I’m all about extra curricular activities but when they start interfering with education I really have a problem. That’s not to say that all my sports kids are bad students.
